Christmas Treats

In the Czech Republic, we can’t do without fairy tales, so we’re delighted to offer children the most famous stories by H. C. Andersen.

Our Christmas selection will also please our most frequent readers, who are mainly interested in novels full of dramatic family and interpersonal relationships. Whether it’s the relationships of real artists (The Age of Light), fictional heroines in different times and countries (The Photograph), or a contemporary woman in her forties (Love for Self-Learners), you can pick the best one for yourself starting January 6, 2020.

Christmas and New Year’s Greetings

To all our loyal readers who have found their way to our newly opened library in its new premises, as well as to our new and future ones, we wish you a Merry Christmas, family peace, and many visits to see us in the New Year!

Christmas Reading

Children are traditionally the ones who look forward to the Christmas holidays the most.

They might not have a snowy Christmas this year, but there is plenty of snow and winter in books. Treat them to some, whether under the tree or here at our library. And it doesn’t just have to be about winter fun—any good book will bring joy.

And it would make us happy if you came to talk to us about it!

The last day you can visit us at the library this year is December 19, and we reopen in the new year on Monday, January 6. 1. 2020.

Mysterious Stories

Generations of readers have known the Foglar-esque world of boyish adventures set in mysterious urban corners.

In a more modern setting, contemporary young writer Vojtěch Matocha brings a group of young people—and not just boys—to the mysterious corners of a city district called Prašina.

Genre-wise, it’s a sci-fi story, a thrilling read with illustrations that beautifully capture the story’s mysterious atmosphere.

The book was so successful among young readers that the author wrote a loose sequel, Prašina: Black Mercurite.

Book Exchange Fund

In November, the Municipal Library of Prague lent our library 300 titles of various genres for one year. This time, in addition to popular detective stories and fiction, we also received various thrillers, sci-fi, and fantasy.

Readers of romantic stories should also find something they like, whether they are mature women or young ladies, now classified in the young adult category.

A series of comics, sometimes quite gritty, is also mostly intended for young readers.

A large part of the collection consists of books for children and youth, featuring not only beautifully illustrated fairy tales but also encyclopedic and educational literature.

The books are on loan for one year; once they are returned, we will request new ones, and your preferences will help guide us in that direction.

Of course, we will also try to supplement the library with interesting titles from our own resources.

Books for children and young adults

In our November new releases, girls will surely find something they like, such as the diaries of an ordinary girl aged 10 to 14 by L. Myracle. Experienced readers will certainly compare them to the popular Dork Diaries. Boys might venture into the mysterious corners of Prague with the heroes of V. Matocha’s novel, who live in a technically different world than the Foglar’s Rapid Arrows.

The fantastic world of R. Dahl, with its witty illustrations, invites younger readers to explore twelve magical stories.

And we haven’t forgotten about beginning readers, whether they want to make friends with a little ghost, follow some frogs, or meet a lazy grandma.

In the library, you can browse the November issue of the youth magazine CVAK! and the Best Books for Children catalog, which features a selection of Czech books for children and young adults compiled annually by a team of experts. It might be a helpful guide when choosing the right book as a Christmas gift.
